Plan 01

1 day in Kudremukh

  1. 01

Day 1: Falls and the park edge

Start early from your base and drive to the Kudremukh National Park area. If you have a booked slot, walk the peak trail only as far as your fitness and the daylight allow; otherwise spend the morning at Kadambi Falls and, if road and water level are safe, Hanumana Gundi. Have an early lunch and rest. In the afternoon, drive to Kalasa for the Kalaseshwara temple, then continue to Horanadu if you still have energy. Return before dark, since the ghat roads are poorly lit and mist can settle quickly.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Kudremukh National ParkHalf to full dayModerateNovember to February; waterfalls are best after the monsoon
Kadambi FallsAbout 1 hourModerateAfter the monsoon; weak in dry months
Kalaseshwara Temple30-60 minutesEasyMorning; October to March

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Kudremukh National Park: Roads in the park are winding and facilities are basic. Short stops at viewpoints and falls are manageable, but trails are uneven, wet in the rains and without much seating. Keep drives short and avoid late departures.

With parents at Kadambi Falls: The approach to the base involves a short descent on uneven ground that can be slippery. Older travellers may prefer to see the falls from above. There is limited seating and few facilities.

Plan 02

2 days in Kudremukh

  1. 01

    Day 1: The peak trek

Book a slot in advance on the Karnataka Forest Department's Aranya Vihaara portal and carry the original photo ID used for the booking. Reach the start point early, walk the long grassland route to the horse-face summit and be back down before sunset, as camping is not allowed. Eat a proper breakfast, carry water in a refillable container and expect a long, tiring day. Rest in the evening.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Kalasa and Horanadu

Visit the Kalaseshwara temple in Kalasa in the morning, then ask locally about access to the Chandranatha Jain basadi, which is reported to be opened on request. Drive on to Horanadu for the Annapoorneshwari temple and a meal. If time remains, stop at a plantation viewpoint on the way back.

Chandranatha Jain Basadi20-30 minutesEasyMorning; check access

Pace: All the stops today are easy on the legs.

Plan 03

3 days in Kudremukh

  1. 01

Day 1: Falls and Ganga Moola

Spend the morning at Kadambi Falls and the Bhagavathi shrine at Ganga Moola, where the Tunga, Bhadra and Netravathi are said to rise. Check access at the forest office first. Keep the afternoon free.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Kadambi Falls: The approach to the base involves a short descent on uneven ground that can be slippery. Older travellers may prefer to see the falls from above. There is limited seating and few facilities.

  2. 02

    Day 2: The peak trek

Do the Kudremukh Peak trek on a booked slot, starting early and finishing before dark. Treat it as the main effort of the trip and plan nothing else that day.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Kudremukh Peak TrekFull day; about 20-22 km round trip by one published estimateDemandingNovember to February; avoid the monsoon

Pace: Kudremukh Peak Trek involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.

With parents at Kudremukh Peak Trek: Not suited to most older travellers or anyone with knee, heart or breathing problems. The route is long with sustained ascents, little shade and no toilets beyond the forest check post. Seniors who still want the hills are better off with the viewpoints and waterfalls.

  3. 03

Day 3: Kalasa, Horanadu and Hanumana Gundi

Take a slower day around Kalasa and Horanadu for the temples and a free meal at Horanadu. If conditions allow, add Hanumana Gundi on the way back, or choose it instead if the temple circuit feels like enough.

Pacing

Pacing a Kudremukh trip for parents and children

  • The peak trek is long and not suitable for most older travellers. Give yourself the options of Kalasa, Horanadu and short waterfall visits instead.
  • Roads are winding ghat roads. If anyone gets car sick, stop often, travel in the morning and avoid driving after dark.
  • Check with the forest office or the official portal before you go, since trails and falls can be closed in heavy rain.
  • Carry a refillable bottle, a rain jacket and a torch. Evenings and mornings can be cool and misty.
  • Temples near Kalasa and Horanadu expect modest dress; Horanadu is reported to disallow shorts.
  • Medical help is limited locally. Carry regular medicines and know the way to Mangaluru or Chikmagalur.
