Plan 01

1 day in Kurseong

  1. 01

Day 1: Tea, railway and a viewpoint

Start at the station to see the toy train and the one-room railway museum, then drive to Makaibari for a morning garden and factory visit with a tasting. Have a simple lunch at the tourist lodge or a cafe near the station. In the afternoon, visit the Netaji museum at Giddapahar, and finish at Eagle's Crag for tea and the evening view over the plains.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Eagle's CragAbout 45 minutes to 1 hourModerateClear mornings, or late afternoon into evening for the lights of Siliguri; October to April

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Eagle's Crag: The approach from town is uphill and some visitors walk it; a taxi can shorten this. Once inside, paths are short with railings and a few places to sit, but there are steps up to the tower.

Plan 02

2 days in Kurseong

  1. 01

Day 1: Station, Dow Hill and a viewpoint

Begin at Kurseong station and its museum, then take a taxi up to Dow Hill for the Deer Park, the Forest Museum and a look at the school campuses from the road. Have lunch in town and rest through the middle of the day. In the late afternoon, go to Eagle's Crag for tea and the view, then dinner near the station.

  2. 02

Day 2: Giddapahar and a tea estate

Visit the Netaji museum in the morning, then continue to Makaibari or another estate for a factory visit and tasting booked in advance. Stop at a tea lounge such as Margaret's Deck on the Darjeeling road if you are heading on, or take a quiet afternoon at your hotel.

Plan 03

3 days in Kurseong

  1. 01

Day 1: The town and the toy train

Walk to Kurseong station, see the museum and the steam shed, and watch the train pass through the market. After lunch, visit Eagle's Crag. Finish with tea at a cafe overlooking the platform.

Day 2: Schools, forest and museum

  3. 03

Day 3: Tea country and temple

Book a Makaibari visit in the morning, with a tasting. Drive to Ambootia Shiv Mandir among the orange orchards, then return for a long lunch and a slow afternoon. If you are fit and the weather is dry, the St Mary's Hill walk is an alternative for the morning.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Kurseong trip for parents and children

  • Hire a taxi for the day rather than relying on walking; Kurseong's roads are steep and the best sights are spread along the ridge.
  • Ask for a ground-floor or easy-access room; many hill hotels have stairs and few lifts.
  • Pack layers and a rain jacket. Cloud can bring the temperature down quickly even in spring.
  • Choose short sections of the toy train rather than the full Siliguri to Darjeeling run; the ride is slow and the seats are small.
  • Avoid the monsoon from June to September, when landslides and road closures can disrupt travel.
  • Plan the St Mary's Hill walk only if everyone is comfortable with long, damp, uphill paths; Eagle's Crag and the Netaji museum are gentler options.
