The short answer

Komodo Island: what visitors should know first

Go if you want the original dragon island and can handle a longer boat day. Komodo is farther than Rinca and trails can be hot, but it has the largest population and often pairs well with Pink Beach.

History and context

The story behind Komodo Island

Komodo National Park was set up in 1980 and listed as a World Heritage Site in 1991. In 2019 the government floated a plan to close Komodo Island for about a year, which local people opposed, and later fee proposals were also changed or cancelled. The situation has moved more than once, so confirm current rules.

Why it matters

Why Komodo Island is worth your time

Komodo is the largest island in the park and gives the dragon its name. Wikipedia estimates about 1,700 dragons live on the island, which is the biggest population. The dragon is the largest living lizard, with males reaching about 3 metres, and it is endangered.

The island is also home to the Komodo community, with about 1,800 residents at the 2020 census. Authorities have discussed limiting tourism to protect the dragons, and local people have been affected. Visiting with a licensed operator and guide, and buying from local sellers, helps keep tourism fair.

    The name island

Komodo is where the dragon takes its name, and the original population is the largest.

  2. 02

    Ranger-led trails

Rangers choose routes by group fitness and the day's dragon activity.

  3. 03

    Pairing with Pink Beach

Most day plans add a snorkel or beach stop nearby after the walk.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Komodo Island is usually visited on a full-day or overnight trip because of the distance from Labuan Bajo. Boats land at the park station, where rangers meet groups and offer trails of different lengths. Plan to walk early; by late morning the ground and air are very hot and dragons are less active.

On the trail you may see dragons resting under trees or near the camp, as well as deer and birds. Keep your group close, listen to the ranger and never approach a dragon. Snakes live here too, so closed shoes matter. Do not walk the island without a ranger.

Many itineraries combine Komodo with Pink Beach or a snorkel stop afterwards. Ask the operator for the planned stops and times. If anyone in the group has limited stamina, consider choosing Rinca for the dragons and keeping the rest of the day light.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Leave very early to reach the island before the heat
  • Carry plenty of water and a hat
  • Do not walk the trail without your ranger
  • Check whether permits are included in your boat price

Walking is unshaded and the heat can be punishing by late morning. Rangers can choose shorter trails, but the jetty approach, rough ground and long boat ride make it harder for frail visitors than Rinca.
Tickets and access
A park permit and ranger are required. Fees and visitor rules have changed over the years and closures to some areas have been discussed, so check the latest position with your operator before you book.
