The short answer

Padar Island: what visitors should know first

Worth it for fit travellers who start early. The viewpoint involves a steep, stepped climb with no shade, so older or unsteady visitors can enjoy the bays from the boat or stay at the shore.

History and context

The story behind Padar Island

Padar sits between Komodo and Rinca. Dragons were once thought extinct on the island, but reports from 2004 suggested at least a dozen had returned, so dragons may live there again. Follow your guide's advice on the trail.

Why it matters

Why Padar Island is worth your time

Padar is the third-largest island in the park, with four deep bays and beaches of varying colours: mostly white, some grey and pink. Steep volcanic hills and a savanna landscape make it look unlike the lush islands common elsewhere in Indonesia.

Its view has become the symbol of Komodo for many travellers. The island is a good reminder that this park is about more than dragons: land, sea and reef together make the landscape that earned its World Heritage listing.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    The ridge viewpoint

From the top you see the curved bays on both sides of the narrow neck of land.

  2. 02

    Differently coloured beaches

The bays have white, grey and pink sand, which is visible from above.

  3. 03

    A quieter alternative

Staying on the beach or boat still gives a good view of the bays.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Padar is usually visited early in the day so the climb is done before the heat. The boat anchors off the jetty and you walk up a stepped path to the ridge. Wear shoes with good grip, carry water and take your time. Some people stop at a lower viewpoint, which already shows part of the bays.

From the top, the island narrows into a saddle with bays on either side, and beaches of different colours curve into the sea. The view is best in clear, low light, so early morning or late afternoon works better than midday. Stay on the marked path; the hillside is steep and loose in places.

The island is dry savanna with little shade. Afterwards, most boats continue to a swim or snorkel stop. If some of your group will not climb, arrange a shaded place on the boat and confirm the time the climbers will return.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Start early to avoid the heat
  • Wear shoes with grip and carry water
  • Tell older companions they can skip the climb
  • Stay on the path; the slopes are loose
