Area by area

Labuan Bajo neighbourhoods compared

  1. 01

    Town centre and the harbour

Best for: First-time visitors, early boat departures and walkable dinners

Good to know: Most hotels, dive shops and restaurants are within walking distance of the harbour, and boats leave from nearby piers. Evenings can be noisy and roads are hilly with steps, so ask about lifts and ground-floor rooms for older guests.

  2. 02

    Hillside and bay-view hotels

Best for: Sunset views and a quieter night

Good to know: Hotels on the slopes above town offer views over the bay. A short taxi ride takes you to the harbour, which is handy if you have a car arranged for the day.

  3. 03

    Waterfront resorts outside the centre

Best for: Families wanting a pool and beach access

Good to know: Resorts along the coast a short drive from the centre have private beaches and pools and suit travellers who want calm after a boat day. Check the transfer time to the pier before booking.

  4. 04

    Liveaboard or cruise boat

Best for: Fit travellers wanting Padar sunrise and remote snorkelling

Good to know: Overnight boats cover more of the park but involve small cabins, shared bathrooms on basic boats and limited medical help. Compare safety equipment and what the operator provides before booking.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
