Day 1: Monastery and Kolakham
Start early at the forest range office to ask about permits and access, then spend an hour at Kagyu Thekchen Ling Monastery. Return to Lava by late afternoon, since the roads are rough and light fades early.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Kolakham 2–3 hours, or overnight Moderate October to April; December to March for birds Kagyu Thekchen Ling Monastery 30–60 minutes Easy Morning, when the light is soft and mist often lifts; October to April for clear views Changey Falls Half a day including the drive Demanding October to April; avoid after heavy rain Pace: Changey Falls involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.
With parents at Kolakham: The road is rough and the village is built on slopes with steps between homestays. Pick a place with level access and a ground-floor room, and expect cold nights.
With parents at Changey Falls: The approach road is rough and the final path is steep, forested and slippery, with no handrails. Most older travellers and anyone with limited mobility should skip the walk and enjoy Kolakham's views instead.

Pacing
Pacing a Lava trip for parents and children
- Lava is around 2,200 m, so take the first day easy and carry any regular medicines; nights can be near freezing in winter.
- Choose a ground-floor room or cottage near the road. Some of the forest compound cottages are down steep paths.
- Skip Changey Falls, Tiffin Dara and Rachela Danda if stamina or balance is an issue; the monastery, Rishop and Kolakham give rewarding views with little walking.
- Roads to Kolakham and Rachela are rough and bumpy. Ask your driver for a jeep with good suspension and take rests.
- Pre-order meals at your stay, since restaurants are few and distances are long.
- Keep a warm layer, rain cover and a torch even for a short outing; cloud and cold arrive quickly.
