Lava sits at roughly 2,200 m in the Kalimpong hills, about 30 km from Kalimpong town, and feels like a different country from the plains below. Pine and broadleaf forest closes in on the road, mist drifts through the small bazaar, and winters are cold enough that this is one of the few places in West Bengal to see snow. It is best known as the gateway to Neora Valley National Park, an 88 sq km reserve famed for red pandas and birds.

The village itself is small. Its centre of gravity is Kagyu Thekchen Ling, a Tibetan Buddhist monastery opened in 1990, and a forest compound with the Forest Department's range office, where permits for the national park are issued. Beyond Lava, a ring of forest villages carries most of the sightseeing: Kolakham and Changey Falls on one side, Rishop and Tiffin Dara on another, and Loleygaon with its canopy walk further off.

Lava rewards a slow plan. Two nights is the sensible minimum, three or more if you want to bird or trek. Cloud and rain control what you will see, so build in slack and do not promise anyone the mountains. For older travellers the main challenges are cold, altitude and rough roads, which a good jeep driver and a warm layer solve better than any amount of planning.

What and where to eat in Lava.

Food to try in Lava

Food and restaurants

Lava has very few restaurants, and most visitors eat where they stay. Guesthouses and homestays serve set meals of rice, dal, vegetables, momos, thukpa and sometimes eggs or chicken, and Forest Department guests usually pre-order from the canteen manager. A few tea stalls near the monastery sell tea, noodles and snacks.

If you have a dietary requirement, say so when you book, and carry some dry snacks for long jeep days to Changey Falls or Rachela Danda. Bottled water is sold in the bazaar. Kalimpong has far more choice if you want a restaurant dinner.

Markets, makers and what to take home.

Shopping in Lava

Shopping

Shopping is minimal. The small bazaar has basic provisions, warm wear and some Tibetan souvenirs, but for serious purchases head to Kalimpong. Local cardamom from Kolakham-area farms can sometimes be bought in the villages. Do not expect formal craft shops, and carry cash, since card and UPI networks can be unreliable in the hills.

Hotels that shape the trip, not just the night.

Choose without overthinking

Which Lava experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Tiffin Dara or Rachela Danda for the big view?

Tiffin Dara is shorter and easier, about 2 km uphill from Rishop. Rachela Danda is higher, colder and a full-day expedition with changing access rules; choose it only if you are fit and have a guide.

Stay in Lava or Kolakham?

Lava is convenient for the forest office, monastery and permits. Kolakham is quieter and better for birds and dawn views, but 8 km away on a rough road with fewer services.

Neora Valley jeep drive or Changey Falls?

The jeep drive suits anyone who wants forest without hard walking. Changey Falls adds a steep 900 m path each way, so it suits fitter visitors only.

Loleygaon day trip or an extra night in Lava?

Loleygaon offers a canopy walk and a warmer Lepcha village but costs a long drive. A second night in Lava gives more chances of clear views and an easier pace.
