How to experience it
This is a day for early starts and flexible plans. Visit the forest office near Lava first to ask what is currently open: the site has been under development by the forest and tourism departments, and permitted access has changed. In the past visitors reached it by jeep as far as Chaudaferi, with the final stretch on foot.
The road is steep, slow and rough. Sources give about 12 km from Lava, but the journey can take several hours by jeep, and the trek from Lava through dense forest is described as a long day. Expect cold, mist and wind at the top.
