Why Shanti Stupa is worth your time
Shanti Stupa, meaning Peace Stupa, was built in the 1980s by the Japanese Buddhist missionary Gyomei Nakamura and sponsored by the Japanese government. It is a modern monument, not an ancient one, but it represents ongoing investment in Buddhist sacred architecture in Ladakh.
White stupas are central to Tibetan Buddhism, symbolising the Buddha's mind and enlightenment. While Shanti Stupa is newer than the historic monasteries, its elevated location and visibility from across the valley have made it a symbol of Leh's spiritual identity and a gathering place for pilgrims.

How to experience it
From Leh bazaar, take a taxi up Changspa hill towards the stupa. The driver will know the route. Parking is informal, often at a small lot below the final approach. From there, walk up paved paths lined with stone stupas and prayer wheels towards the main white stupa on the hilltop.
Once at the top, circumambulate the stupa (walk clockwise around it) if you are inclined, then settle on one of the benches or steps to take in the views. Below you spread the Leh valley, the Indus river winding through it, and mountains in all directions. The light changes throughout the day; sunrise fills the valley with gold, while sunset lights the western peaks.
The stupa has a shrine inside accessed by steps; the interior is usually simple, with a Buddha statue and devotional objects. Spend 30 minutes to an hour here before returning to Leh.
