The short answer

Madhogarh Fort: what visitors should know first

The best fort near Mahendragarh. Drive up the paved road to the car park, walk the ramparts and palace, and enjoy the view. Go in the cooler months and carry water, since facilities are limited and parts are ruined.

History and context

The story behind Madhogarh Fort

Maharaja Madho Singh I built the fort in the first half of the 18th century. Around 1755 the area passed from the Rajputs to the Marathas, and Khande Rao Holkar captured the fort on 16 February 1792. Under the Treaty of Surji-Anjangaon, Daulat Rao Scindia ceded Haryana to the British East India Company on 30 December 1803. The ASI is the listed governing body, and the Haryana government plans restoration and a tourist circuit.

Why it matters

Why Madhogarh Fort is worth your time

Madhogarh was built by Madho Singh I in the first half of the 18th century and stood on a route between Jaipur and Delhi. It later passed through Maratha hands, with Khande Rao Holkar capturing it in 1792, and then to the British in 1803.

It is the most dramatic of Mahendragarh district's forts, and its inclusion in the planned Rewari, Narnaul, Mahendragarh and Madhogarh tourist circuit makes it the main reason to explore this quiet corner of Haryana.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Drive from Mahendragarh along the state highway towards Satnali and turn in at Madhogarh village. A paved road of about 2.6 km runs from the village bus stop up to a car park inside the fort, which saves the hardest climb.

From the car park, explore the multi-storey palace and its two-storey gateway, then walk along the stone ramparts that follow the ridge, with observation towers and bastions. A stepwell about 100 m west of the palace once fed the fort with rainwater, and you can go down its steps with care.

Back at the village, look at the Shekhawati-style havelis. Because restoration work is planned and partly done, check what is open before you go, and bring water and a hat.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Go in the cooler months and carry water
  • Check what is open before you climb
  • Wear shoes with grip for the ramparts
  • Drive up to the car park rather than walking
  • Look at the village havelis on the way down
