Mahendragarh is a quiet town in southern Haryana, on the edge of the Aravalli hills. It was earlier called Kanaud, after the Kanaudia Brahmins who founded it, and took its present name in the 1860s after Mahendra Singh of Patiala, whose father renamed the fort in 1861. The fort still stands in the middle of town, a square, high-walled building that has been used as a court complex and is earmarked for restoration.
The better sight is Madhogarh Fort, about 12 km away on an Aravalli ridge. Built in the first half of the 18th century by Madho Singh I, it has ramparts along the ridge, a ruined palace and a stepwell, and a paved road runs most of the way up.
Farther afield, Narnaul has the Mughal-era Jal Mahal, the tomb of Shah Quli Khan and the older Chor Gumbad on a rock, while Dhosi Hill, an extinct volcano near Narnaul, is a pilgrimage climb tied to the sage Chyavana. Together they make a small heritage circuit that the state plans to promote as a Rewari, Narnaul, Mahendragarh and Madhogarh route.
This is not a polished tourist town. Signage is limited, entry fees and timings are mostly unpublished, and summers are hot and dry. Come between October and March, hire a car, and treat Mahendragarh as a base for exploring a lesser-known corner of Haryana at an unhurried pace.
