Maheshwar is a small town on the northern bank of the Narmada in Khargone district, about 90 km from Indore. Tradition identifies it with the ancient city of Mahishmati, and for much of the later 18th century it was the seat of Ahilyabai Holkar, the Holkar queen who ruled the Malwa territories from 1767 to 1795. She left the town its fort and palace complex, its riverside temples and the broad stone ghats that now define it. The Holkars moved their capital to Indore in 1818, which is one reason Maheshwar stayed small.
The pleasure here is in doing very little, well. The Ahilya Fort walls rise some 30 metres above the river, and the ghats below them are where the town bathes, prays and gossips. A walk down from the Rajwada to Ahilyeshwar Temple and along the ghats takes an easy morning. A short boat ride gives you the fort and the ghats from the water, and an evening sitting by the river does more than another sight would.
Maheshwar is also a living textile town. Maheshwari handloom saris and fabrics, with their reversible borders and striped pallus, have been woven here for generations, and the Rehwa Society, founded in 1979, helped revive the craft. You can see looms at work and buy directly.
For families and older travellers it is gentle but not flat. The ghats mean steps, some of them steep, and summer heat is fierce. Come between November and February, stay one night or two, and pair it with a day trip to Omkareshwar or Mandu, each of which has its own guide on this site.
