Day 1: Fort, ghats and looms
Reach Maheshwar by mid-morning, ideally having left Indore early. Start at the Rajwada courtyard inside Ahilya Fort, then walk down to Ahilyeshwar Temple and the ghat below it. Visit Rajarajeshwar Temple, which is a short uphill walk away, and look at the Ahilya and Vithoji chhatris. After lunch at a simple café near the fort gate, rest, then visit the Rehwa Society weaving centre. Take a boat on the river in the late afternoon and stay for the evening aarti on the ghat before the drive back.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Ahilyeshwar Temple 30 to 45 minutes Moderate Morning, and full-moon evenings if you want to hear bhajans Rajarajeshwar (Sahasrarjun) Temple 30 to 45 minutes Moderate Morning; check the evening schedule locally Ahilya and Vithoji chhatris 30 to 45 minutes Moderate Morning or late afternoon Rehwa Society weaving centre 45 to 90 minutes Easy Weekday daytime; check hours locally Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Ahilyeshwar Temple: Steps lead down from the fort to the temple, and the courtyard is stone. Shade is limited and seating is scarce. A vehicle can get you close to the lower area.
With parents at Rajarajeshwar (Sahasrarjun) Temple: A stone-paved path rises from the ghat area, and the temple courtyard is level. There is little shade or seating, so rest on the way if needed.

Day 3: Omkareshwar or Mandu day trip
Take a day trip to Omkareshwar, about 80 km away per MP Tourism, for the Shiva temple on the river island. Or travel to Mandu for its ruins, though that is a longer drive. Both have separate guides on this site. Return to Maheshwar or continue to Indore.

Pacing
Pacing a Maheshwar trip for parents and children
- The ghats and fort approaches have many stone steps and almost no rails. Walk them in the morning or late afternoon, take a stick if you need one, and avoid wet steps in the monsoon.
- Wear shoes you can slip off easily for temples, and carry socks for hot stone in the afternoon.
- A boat gives you the fort and the ghats without the stairs, but getting in and out can be awkward, so ask for a steady hand at the jetty.
- Stay for one night at least. The drive from Indore is long enough to tire older travellers if you try to do it in one day.
- Bring water, a hat and sun protection. Shade is limited, and summer heat can be severe.
- Choose a hotel with a ground-floor or lift-served room, and confirm vehicle access to the door.
