Mahoba is a small Bundelkhand town that was once a capital of the Chandela dynasty, the same rulers who built the temples of Khajuraho. The legend says its name comes from a great festival, a mahotsav, held here by their ancestor Chandravarman. What remains is a landscape more than a skyline: large stone-edged lakes such as Madan Sagar and Kirat Sagar, a ruined ninth-century Sun temple, shrines on the water's edge and a hill fort above the town.
The town is also the home of the Alha-Udal story, the 12th-century epic of two brothers who served the Chandela king Paramardi against Prithviraj Chauhan. Inscriptions at Madanpur attest the battle, and the ballads that grew around it are still sung across Bundelkhand, especially in the rainy season. Ask almost anyone in Mahoba about the brothers and you will get an answer.
Mahoba is not a polished tourist destination. Sights are simple, signage is thin and fees and timings are mostly unpublished, so it rewards people who like old stone, quiet water and patient conversation. The Vijai Sagar bird sanctuary, a short drive away, adds a winter birding morning, and Kulpahar and Charkhari make easy day trips.
For older or family travellers, Mahoba works best as a one- or two-day stop on a longer Bundelkhand or Khajuraho trip. Most sights are level lakeside stops; the fort climb is the one demanding piece. Visit between November and February, when the heat is manageable and migratory birds are on the water.
