Mainpuri is a working district headquarters in the Braj region of western Uttar Pradesh, about 150 metres above sea level on the flat Gangetic plain. It is not a polished tourist town and does not try to be. What it offers is smaller and more specific: a wetland sanctuary that fills with winter birds, farmland where sarus cranes nest close to villages, and a wood-and-metal craft, tarkashi, that carries a Geographical Indication tag.
The town itself grew in the eighteenth century. Mukhamganj, now the main part of the town, was founded in 1746, and the British set up a civil station here in 1802. Today the centre is a mix of crowded bazaar lanes, a few green spaces such as Phoolbagh and Lohia Park, and a scatter of old temples, among them the Sheetla Devi temple, which hosts a long spring fair. The old Garhi, or fort, is private property and not open as a sight.
The real draw is outside town. Saman Bird Sanctuary, a Ramsar-listed oxbow wetland in the south of the district, is at its best from November to February, and the surrounding blocks of Karhal and Kishni hold one of the country's densest sarus crane populations. Visit with modest expectations about facilities, a hired car and a flexible plan, and Mainpuri makes a rewarding one or two days, ideally combined with Agra, about 116 km away.
