Plan 01

1 day in Mainpuri

  1. 01

Day 1: Saman and the town

Leave early for Saman Bird Sanctuary in the south of the district and spend the cool morning on the wetland edge looking for storks, cranes and winter ducks. Return to Mainpuri for a late lunch and a rest, then visit a tarkashi workshop in the afternoon to see wire being hammered into sheesham wood. End with a quiet walk in Phoolbagh or Lohia Park and, if you like, darshan at the Sheetla Devi temple.

Sheetla Devi Temple30 to 45 minutes; longer during the fairEasyMorning; the spring fair in March or April

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Saman Bird Sanctuary: Terrain is flat, but paths and wetland edges are unpaved and uneven, shade is scarce and toilets or seating cannot be assumed. Older visitors do best with a car at the roadside, short walks and a hat.

Plan 02

2 days in Mainpuri

  1. 01

Day 1: Town, craft and temple

Spend the morning with tarkashi artisans and a look at finished pieces, then have lunch in the town centre. After a rest, visit the Sheetla Devi temple and the older Shiva temples such as Bhimsen Mandir, and take an evening stroll in Phoolbagh.

Pace: All the stops today are easy on the legs.

  2. 02

Day 2: Saman and sarus country

Start at dawn for Saman Bird Sanctuary, then drive on towards Karhal and Kishni to look for sarus cranes in fields and village wetlands. Keep the afternoon free for the drive back or onward to Agra.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Mainpuri trip for parents and children

  • Visit Saman between November and February and go in the morning, when it is cool and birds are active; the ground is unpaved and shade is scarce.
  • Hire a car with a driver for the day. Public transport to the sanctuary is thin, and you will want to stop at wetlands along the way.
  • Carry water, snacks, a hat and any medication; there are few reliable shops or toilets near the wetlands.
  • Choose a hotel with a lift or ground-floor rooms, and check room standards and power backup, as the choice in town is small.
  • Agra, about 116 km away, has the nearest hospitals of any scale if you are travelling with a health concern; plan your route with that in mind.
  • Dress modestly for temples and expect to remove shoes.
