Majorda Beach travel guide

A long, flat stretch of pale sand in South Goa, calmer than the northern beaches and known as much for its bread as its sea.

Majorda Beach lies on the Salcete coast of South Goa, a few kilometres north of Colva, and is the seafront of a village better known in Goa for its bakers than for nightlife. The sand is wide, flat and light-coloured, with a short run of beach shacks, sunbeds and a handful of water-sports stalls in season. It is busier than the quiet stretches further south, but far less hectic than Calangute or Baga, and families with children and older travellers tend to settle in easily.

The village behind the beach matters as much as the sand. Majorda is traditionally credited with teaching Goans European-style baking, and a few wood-fired bakeries still use toddy rather than yeast for poi. The parish church of Mãe de Deus (Mother of God), dating to the Jesuit period of the 1580s, stands about 2 km inland. A day here can reasonably combine a morning on the sand, a bakery stop and an unhurried seafood lunch.

Swimming needs the usual Goa caution. Lifeguards from the state-appointed agency Drishti Marine cover major beaches in the season, and red flags during the monsoon mean the sea is closed to swimming. Beach shacks are licensed seasonally, roughly October to May, and change hands, so check a place is open before you plan a meal around it.

Majorda works best as a calm base with a car or taxi for day trips. Its neighbours Colva, Benaulim and Betalbatim each have their own Raahzo guide, and Margao, South Goa's commercial town, is a short drive inland. The beach itself has little shade and soft sand near the shacks, so plan for sun hats, water and a seat in a shack rather than a long walk.

Majorda Beach itinerary

One good day

1 day at Majorda Beach

Start with warm poi from a village bakery such as Godinho Bakery, checking its hours first. Spend the late morning on the sand under a shack umbrella, swimming only where lifeguards and green flags allow. Have a long seafood lunch at one of the beach shacks, then rest. In the late afternoon, visit the Mother of God Church about 2 km inland, then return to the beach for sunset and an easy dinner on Beach Road.

Two days

2 days at Majorda Beach

Walk the beach in the late afternoon once the heat drops, then choose a shack for sunset. Take dinner at a Beach Road restaurant such as Pentagon Restaurant & Garden Pub, which has a garden and live music, or a quieter family-run place if your parents prefer an early night.

Day-by-day plan →

Three unhurried days

What and where to eat in Majorda Beach.

Food to try in Majorda Beach

Food and restaurants · 6 guides

Majorda eats seafood by the beach and bread by the village. The beach shacks serve the standard Goa menu: fried and masala-fried fish, prawns, calamari, fish curry rice and cold drinks, with the catch usually chalked up or shown on a counter. Shacks open seasonally, roughly October to May, and some change hands, so check that a place is trading before you plan a meal around it.

Inland, Beach Road and the village have family restaurants for fish thali and Goan curries, and an Italian restaurant with a wood-fired oven. The village is also known for traditional bakeries; poi and pao are baked in wood-fired ovens and best eaten warm, early. Keep to bottled or filtered water, and ask for less spice if needed.

Shopping in Majorda Beach

Shopping

Majorda is a food-and-bread village rather than a shopping destination. Beach Road has a few small gift and beachwear shops, but nothing specific enough to recommend, so treat souvenirs as an extra rather than a plan. The best things to take home are bakery items such as poi, sausage bread and Goan sweets, bought fresh from village bakeries.

For real shopping, go to Margao, about 20 to 25 minutes inland, for the municipal market, textiles and spices, or to the Colva beach road for beachwear and handicrafts. Bargain politely at stalls, and buy cashews and spices from fixed-price shops if you prefer not to haggle.

Choose without overthinking

Which Majorda Beach experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Beach shack or a Beach Road restaurant for lunch?

A shack puts you on the sand with sunbeds and a sea view, but you eat the standard Goan menu and it may be closed outside the season. A Beach Road restaurant is steadier, shadier and easier for older diners, usually with a broader menu and a proper roof.

Stay at the beach, or inland at a paddy-field resort?

Beach Road stays let you walk to the sand and eat at shacks. An inland resort such as Alila Diwa Goa is quieter, with pools and green views, but you will use a shuttle or taxi to reach the beach.

Majorda or Colva for a beach day?

Majorda is calmer, with fewer sellers and a short row of shacks. Colva, about 5 km south, has more of everything: bigger crowds, a market road and more places to eat. Pick Majorda for peace, Colva for variety.

Godinho Bakery or a hands-on baking session?

A bakery stop costs little and takes ten minutes, ideal for a quick taste of toddy-fermented poi. A baking session, such as the Life of Pao experience, suits curious families who want to knead, shape and bake, and needs booking and your own transport.

Majorda Beach travel tips

  1. 01

    Season

Goa's beach season runs roughly November to March. By May it is hot and humid, and in the monsoon the sea is closed and most shacks are shut. Plan accordingly.

  2. 02

    Swimming safety

Swim only in front of lifeguards and obey the flags: red means stay out. During the monsoon, Drishti Marine closes beaches to swimming and water sports are suspended.

  3. 03

    Heat

Daytime temperatures sit around 31 to 33 degrees in the dry season, with humidity from March. Beach in the early morning or late afternoon, and keep midday for a shaded table or your room.

  4. 04

    Getting around

Beach Road is walkable, but anything further needs a taxi, auto or scooter. Agree the fare before you set off, or hire a car with driver for the day. Airport transfers are best arranged in advance.

  5. 05

    Shacks and money

Shacks are licensed seasonally and can change hands, so check that one is trading. Carry some cash for small stalls, though many restaurants take cards or UPI. Check prices before ordering seafood sold by weight.

  6. 06

    Sun and sand

Shade is limited on the beach itself, so take a hat, sunscreen and water. Sunbeds are often free if you order from the shack; ask first. Soft sand makes walking tiring, and hot sand burns bare feet in the middle of the day.

  7. 07

    Dress and photography

Beachwear is fine on the sand, but cover up in the village and especially in churches such as Mother of God Church. Ask before photographing fishermen, bakers or people at work.

  8. 08

    Opening hours

Bakeries often open in the late afternoon or early morning, and restaurants may close on one weekday. Hours listed online conflict, so confirm by phone or Google Maps before making a special trip.

Majorda Beach with elderly parents: what to know

  • Book a room within a few hundred metres of the beach entrance or take a resort with a shuttle, as soft sand makes even short walks tiring.
  • Sit in a shack with a fixed table and shade instead of a sunbed in direct sun; most shacks have steps or a sandy approach, so ask for a table on the nearest level.

Majorda Beach FAQs

Is Majorda Beach good for swimming?

Yes in season, where lifeguards are on duty and green flags are flying, but Goa's sea can carry currents. In the monsoon, roughly June to September, red flags mean the sea is closed to swimming.

Is Majorda Beach suitable for older travellers?

Largely yes. The beach is flat and wide and the shacks offer shaded seating. Soft sand, heat and a few steps at shacks are the main challenges, so choose a stay close to the beach entrance.

When are the beach shacks open?

Goa's shacks are licensed seasonally, roughly October to May, and some change hands between seasons. Check that a particular shack is open before you plan a meal there.

How far is Majorda from the airport?

Goa International Airport at Dabolim is roughly 15 to 18 km away, about 35 to 50 minutes by road. The newer Mopa airport in North Goa is much further.

Is Majorda known for anything besides the beach?

Yes, for its bakeries. The village is traditionally credited with teaching Goans European-style baking, and a few bakers still use toddy and wood-fired ovens.
