Plan 01

1 day in Majuli

  1. 01

Day 1: Ferry, satras and sunset

Catch an early ferry from Neamati Ghat and confirm the last return crossing before you leave the mainland. Hire a taxi at Kamalabari ghat for the day. Visit Kamalabari or Uttar Kamalabari first, then Auniati and Garamur, leaving Samaguri for the mask workshop if you have time. Eat a simple lunch in Garamur. Return to Kamalabari ghat well ahead of the last ferry and watch the light on the river while you wait.

Plan 02

2 days in Majuli

  1. 01

Day 1: Arrival and the satras

Cross by ferry in the morning and settle in at your stay. After lunch visit Kamalabari and Uttar Kamalabari satras, then walk or drive to the river at sunset. If a naam prasanga (devotional prayer) is on, ask politely whether visitors may sit at the back.

  2. 02

Day 2: Masks, pottery and a village

Visit Samaguri Satra in the morning to see mask-makers at work. Drive on to Auniati or Garamur, then spend the afternoon in Salmora to watch hand-built pottery, depending on what the potters are doing that day. Allow a Mising home meal in the evening if your host can arrange one, and keep a buffer for the ferry the next day.

Plan 03

3 days in Majuli

  1. 01

    Day 1: Arrival and Kamalabari

Take the morning ferry, settle in, and keep the afternoon light. Visit Kamalabari Satra, then Uttar Kamalabari, then watch sunset at the ghat.

  2. 02

Day 2: Royal satras and masks

Spend the morning at Auniati and Garamur, the two royal satras that are easiest to combine, with lunch in Garamur. In the afternoon visit Samaguri Satra for mask-making and, if time remains, Dakhinpat on the southern side of the island.

Day 3: Pottery, wetlands and Mising life

Go early for birds at the island's beels, in winter especially, with a local guide if you can. Then visit the Salmora potters, spend the afternoon in a Mising village, and take a late-afternoon ferry back, leaving a clear margin before the last crossing.

Pacing

Pacing a Majuli trip for parents and children

  • Confirm the last ferry time each day and be at the ghat early. Missing it means a night on the wrong bank.
  • Hire one taxi for the day rather than switching between autos; satras are spread out and the roads are rough in patches.
  • Ask ahead about steps and toilets. Rooms and ghats can be basic, and some homestay beds are on raised platforms.
  • Carry regular medicines for the whole trip plus extra. Medical facilities on the island are limited and the nearest large hospitals are on the mainland.
  • Mornings are the best time for satras and village visits; afternoons in March to May turn hot and humid.
  • Keep a flexible day on either side of the crossing in case ferry timings change with water levels.
