Plan 01

1 day in Malacca

  1. 01

Day 1: The heritage core on foot

Start at about 8:30 am at A Famosa and climb St Paul's Hill while the air is cooler, then come down the other side to Stadthuys and Christ Church on Dutch Square. Cross the Malacca River on foot towards Jonker Street for lunch and a rest. In the afternoon, go inside the Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum on Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock, then walk along Harmony Street past Cheng Hoon Teng, Kampung Kling Mosque and the Sri Poyatha Vinayagar Moorthi Temple. Finish with the river cruise around dusk, or on Friday to Sunday evening the Jonker Street night market.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
A Famosa (Porta de Santiago)20 to 30 minutesEasyEarly morning, before about 9 am, for cooler air and fewer tour groups
Christ Church15 to 20 minutesEasyMorning, when it is quiet and the square is cooler

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Jonker Street (Jalan Hang Jebat): The street is level, but the night market is crowded and the pavement and drains can be uneven. There are cafes for rests, and air-conditioned shops. Many shops close on Tuesdays.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Malacca trip for parents and children

  • Visit the open-air sights, A Famosa and St Paul's Hill, between 8 and 10 am, and rest indoors through the afternoon. Midday heat and humidity are the main strain for older travellers.
  • St Paul's Hill has a climb with steps and uneven stone at the top. Go up slowly, carry water and use the shaded benches along the way, or skip the summit and see A Famosa and Stadthuys instead.
  • Old shophouse pavements are narrow and uneven, with open drains in places. Wear closed, grippy shoes and expect to step off the kerb in some lanes.
  • Use Grab or an agreed taxi fare for any journey beyond the core. Terminal taxis often refuse the meter according to travel guides, so confirm a price first.
  • Buy travel insurance that covers hospital care. Mahkota Medical Centre is a private hospital on Jalan Merdeka in Melaka with an international patient service; carry prescriptions in the original packs.
  • Temple, mosque and church visits need covered shoulders and knees, and shoes come off at temples and mosques. Slip-on shoes save time and effort.
