Why it matters

Why Male Mahadeshwara Wildlife Sanctuary is worth your time

The sanctuary protects about 906 square kilometres of forest and forms part of a wider tiger habitat linked to Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary and Biligiriranga Temple Tiger Reserve. Tiger numbers have grown since 2013.

It also shows how pilgrimage, local communities and wildlife overlap. Tiger reserve status has been proposed for years, and the decision has to weigh conservation against the needs of the temple traffic and the communities living in the forest.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

For most people the sanctuary is the drive: a long climb through dry and moist deciduous forest on the road to the temple. Go in daylight, stop only at open, safe pull-ins and keep windows and voices low. Elephants use the road, so give them space and never approach on foot.

Beyond the road, access is restricted. Forest department huts exist at Gopinatham, about 36 km from the town, and treks into the interior need prior permission from the forest department. Do not enter the forest without it, and do not rely on informal offers from touts.

Sightings of elephants, gaur and sambar are possible, while tigers and leopards are rarely seen. Treat any wildlife as a bonus. The best approach is to combine the temple visit with a slow drive, ask the forest office about current arrangements, and go home before dusk.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Contact the forest office for current rules
  • Do not enter forest areas without permission
  • Stay in the vehicle on forest stretches
  • Drive only in daylight
