BR Hills travel guide

A forested hill range on the Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border, with a white-rock Vishnu temple, Soliga culture and a tiger reserve of elephants and gaur.

BR Hills, short for Biligiriranga Hills, rises in Chamarajanagar district of southern Karnataka, close to the Tamil Nadu border. The name comes from the white rock on which the Ranganatha temple stands, and the whole range is protected as the Biligiri Rangaswamy Temple Wildlife Sanctuary, declared a tiger reserve in 2011. The hills are about 90 km from Mysuru and 160 km from Bengaluru by road.

The appeal is a combination that few places offer: a working hill temple, a forest of scrub, deciduous woods, shola and grassland, and the Soliga people whose traditions tie the two together. Elephants, gaur, sambar and chital are the animals most visitors meet; tigers and leopards live here, but sightings are never guaranteed. Jungle Lodges and Resorts runs the best-known camp and safaris from K Gudi, on the Chamarajanagar side.

For families and older travellers, BR Hills is best treated as an overnight stay from Mysuru or Bengaluru, not a rushed day trip. Visits are largely by vehicle, so physical demands are low, but facilities are limited and rules about entry hours and overnight stays are strict. Check safari slots, fees and permits before you travel, and treat the forest with respect.

Food to try in BR Hills

Food and restaurants

There are no restaurants within the sanctuary. Most visitors eat at the Jungle Lodges camp, where meals are served in fixed-menu style, or at forest rest houses where caretakers can cook if arranged. Chamarajanagar and Yelandur have small hotels and tea stalls for simple South Indian vegetarian meals. Carry water, fruit and dry snacks for the day, because nothing is sold along the forest roads.

Markets, makers and what to take home.

Shopping in BR Hills

Shopping

BR Hills is not a shopping destination. Chamarajanagar and Yelandur have everyday shops for supplies, and Soliga communities sell forest produce such as honey in some places; buy only from legal sources and avoid anything that comes from the sanctuary itself.

Hotels that shape the trip, not just the night.

Choose without overthinking

Which BR Hills experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Day trip or overnight stay?

An overnight stay lets you take both a dawn and a late-afternoon safari and avoids the evening exit rush. A day trip from Mysuru works if you mostly want the temple and a short drive.

K Gudi camp or a forest rest house?

The Jungle Lodges camp is full-board with safaris arranged; forest rest houses are cheaper and booked through the Conservator of Forests at Chamarajanagar. Choose the camp for comfort and the rest house for budget.

Jeep safari or the Honnametti trek?

The jeep safari suits most visitors and older travellers. Honnametti is for fit walkers with forest approval and a guide.
