Before you go
BR Hills with elderly parents: what to know
- Choose a vehicle-based plan: jeep safaris and the temple by car need little walking.
- Book the K Gudi camp early and confirm lighting and power arrangements.
- The temple has a steep drop behind it; stay behind the railings and watch for monkeys.
- Carry medicines, a torch and water; medical help is far away.
- Leave the reserve by the evening closing time unless staying inside.
- Skip the Honnametti trek unless you are fit and have forest approval.
Easiest first
Places in BR Hills sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (2)
- Biligiri Rangaswamy Temple Wildlife Sanctuary (BRT Tiger Reserve) (Places to visit · Half a day to 2 days) — Most sightseeing is from a vehicle, so walking is minimal. The roads are winding hill roads, there is little roadside seating or shade, and medical facilities are far away, so carry any medicines you need.
- Dodda Sampige Mara (Places to visit · 30-45 minutes) — The walk from the track to the tree is short but uneven and shaded; sitting places are scarce, and the jeep ride on forest tracks is bumpy.
Some walking — plan a break (1)
- Biligiri Ranganatha Temple (Places of worship · About 1 hour) — Visitors can reach the temple by vehicle or on foot, but there are steps and a steep drop behind the shrine, with railings added. Monkeys are common, so older visitors should hold on to bags.
Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (1)
- Honnametti Viewpoint and Honnametti Kallu (Places to visit · Half a day with approvals) — Trekking is on uneven forest trails with wildlife, no seating or shelter, and no easy access to medical help. It is not suitable for anyone with heart, knee or breathing problems.

Practical tips for BR Hills
- Entry hours. Entry is reported to be allowed from about 6 am to 6 pm; visitors not staying overnight should leave by dusk.
- Safari booking. Safaris run through Jungle Lodges with the forest department; confirm slots and fees before arriving.
- Overnight rules. Staying overnight on the Chamarajanagar side needs forest department permission.
- Weather. Nights at altitude can be cool, and the hills are misty and wet during the monsoon.
- Wildlife safety. Stay in the vehicle unless your guide says otherwise, and do not feed monkeys or other animals.
- Facilities. Few shops and medical services; carry water, medicines and cash.
- Dress. Wear muted colours and sturdy shoes, and dress modestly at the temple.
