The short answer
Bombay Darbar: what visitors should know first
The most reliable Indian meal we could confirm near Malé, and a good option for families who eat at a mixed kitchen. Strict vegetarians should weigh the shared kitchen, and Jain diners need to ask first.

Why it matters
Why Bombay Darbar is worth your time
For an Indian family, a dependable dal and roti can make a long Maldives trip far easier, particularly for parents who do not take to tuna-based local food. Bombay Darbar's menu also solves a common difficulty here: people in one party can eat different things, since the vegetarian list sits beside non-vegetarian dishes.
It also serves as a test case. At least one travel blog calls it a pure-veg restaurant, and yet its own menu lists chicken, beef and seafood sections. That gap is the reason we tag it only as Indian. Relying on the restaurant's own menu, and not on recycled lists, is the single most useful habit for vegetarian and Jain travellers in Malé City.
Highlights
What not to miss
- 01
The dal list
Six dal dishes appear under Dal Ki Bahar, from Dal Fry to Dal Peshawari, which suits a simple family meal.
- 02
Tandoor breads
The site mentions a charcoal tandoor, and the menu has naan, kulcha, paratha and roti.
- 03
Vegetable biryani
It is a straightforward main for vegetarians, listed alongside a paneer version.
Plan your visit
How to experience it
Plan this for a Hulhumalé day, perhaps after a morning at the beach, as the restaurant is on that island and not on Malé Island. A taxi or bus across the Sinamalé Bridge is worthwhile if you are craving familiar food, and the restaurant also offers pickup, which helps a family staying in a nearby guesthouse.
Vegetarians have a real choice here. The menu has dedicated vegetarian sections, with several dals including Dal Bombay Darbar and Rajma Dal, paneer dishes, Jeera Aloo, Aloo Gobhi, vegetable biryani and a range of naan and roti. Say clearly that you want no fish, chicken or egg in the dish, and ask about shared cooking if that matters to you.
For Jain diners the position is less simple. The restaurant makes no statement about Jain food, and many vegetarian dishes list onion or garlic. Telephone ahead, explain what you need and decide from the answer. Do not assume a dish can be adapted. Vegans should also ask, since no vegan marking appears on the menu and many dishes use paneer, cream or butter.
