The short answer

Hulhumalé Beach: what visitors should know first

Yes, for a family morning or the last evening before a flight. It is the easiest beach in Malé City, but it is a public local beach, so dress modestly and leave swimwear for resorts.

History and context

The story behind Hulhumalé Beach

Reclamation began in October 1997, with Phase I completed by June 2002 and first residents arriving in 2004. Phase II was launched in 2015, and four bridges link the two phases.

Why it matters

Why Hulhumalé Beach is worth your time

Hulhumalé exists because Malé ran out of room. Reclamation of the lagoon began on 16 October 1997, and the first phase of about 188 hectares was finished by 2002. Residents began moving in during 2004, and the 2022 census counted more than 65,000 people here. This beach, like the land behind it, was built by engineers.

The result is a very different experience of Malé City from the crowded old island. It also shows how the country is dealing with its two great problems: housing and the rising sea. Spending a morning here tells you about the future of the Maldives as much as the mosques tell you about its past.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Treat this as a morning out, or as the easy final evening before you fly. Get to Hulhumalé by bus or taxi over the Sinamalé Bridge and past the airport; it is also a sensible place to sleep the night before an early departure. Start with a walk on the sand, where you can stop at the swing and see the watersports operators along the beach, then find a seat in the shade.

Swim only in modest clothing, and keep the family near others rather than wandering to empty stretches. This is a residential area, and a beach used by local families in the evening, so respect how people behave here. Choose a meal on this side of the water, since Hulhumalé has the two restaurants most useful to vegetarian and vegan diners in this guide.

Older travellers can do just the seafront road, since buses and taxis make the journey manageable. Book your watersports directly and check they are licensed and insured if you are arranging anything for children.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Bathe in modest clothing
  • Bring water and a hat for midday
  • Check an operator's safety gear before booking any watersport
  • Stay nearby if you have an early flight
