Plan 01

1 day in Malé

  1. 01

Day 1: The historic core on foot

Start at about 9 am at the Old Friday Mosque and its minaret, looking first at the carved tombstones and the shrine of Medhu Ziyaaraiy opposite. Walk a few minutes to Muliaage and then through Sultan Park to the National Museum, and give the museum an hour of air conditioning. Cross to Republic Square and the Fish Market on the north shore while the harbour is active. Rest over lunch. Around 3 pm, once the heat eases, see the Islamic Centre outside prayer times, then take a taxi to Artificial Beach and the Tsunami Monument for the late afternoon.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Old Friday Mosque (Hukuru Miskiy)30 to 45 minutes outside; longer if you have permission to go inEasyEarly morning, outside prayer times
Muliaage (President's Residence)10 minutesEasyMorning, as part of the historic-core walk
Sultan Park20 to 30 minutesEasyMorning, or as a shaded break between sights
National MuseumAbout 1 hourEasyLate morning, when you want to be indoors
Republic Square (Jumhooree Maidhaan)15 minutesEasyEarly morning or evening, when it is cooler
Islamic Centre (Masjid-al-Sultan Muhammad Thakurufaanu Al-Auzam)30 to 45 minutesModerateMid-morning or mid-afternoon, between prayer times
Artificial Beach30 minutesEasyLate afternoon, ideally not on a Friday if you want quiet
Tsunami Monument10 minutesEasyEarly morning or late afternoon

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Islamic Centre (Masjid-al-Sultan Muhammad Thakurufaanu Al-Auzam): Expect stairs to the raised entrance and prayer hall, and bare feet on stone once your shoes are off. The hall is spacious and calm, but seating is limited. Those who cannot manage steps can see the dome and minaret from the square.

Plan 02

2 days in Malé

    Day 1: Malé Island

Follow the one-day plan at an easier pace: Old Friday Mosque and Sultan Park in the morning, the museum before lunch, and the Islamic Centre and seafront in the late afternoon.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Hulhumalé

Cross the Sinamalé Bridge to Hulhumalé by bus or taxi. Sit on the man-made beach in the early morning, take a long break through the middle of the day, and plan your main meal here, because the Indian and vegan-friendly options in this guide are both on this island. Stay for the sunset before heading back.

Plan 03

3 days in Malé

  1. 01

    Day 1: Malé Island

Do the historic core slowly: mosque, park and museum in the morning; rest; the Islamic Centre and Artificial Beach later in the day.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time

  2. 02

    Day 2: Villimalé

Take the ferry from Malé for a quiet half day on Villimalé, walking the island and sitting at the public beach. Return for an afternoon rest and a slow stroll past the fish harbour and the Local Market.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
VillimaléHalf a dayModerateEarly morning or late afternoon

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Villimalé: The crossing is short, but check the steps and gap when you board the ferry, since older travellers may need a hand. The island is flat, with limited shade and few places to sit, so keep your walk short and plan around a café or the public beach.

  3. 03

    Day 3: Hulhumalé

Move across to Hulhumalé, ideally with your bags if you fly the next morning, since the airport is close. Beach before the heat, a long lunch, and an easy evening on the seafront.

Pacing

Pacing a Malé trip for parents and children

  • Plan outdoor sightseeing for before 10 am or after 4 pm. Temperatures vary little through the year, at about 30 to 32°C by day and rarely under 25°C at night, and the humidity makes it feel hotter.
  • Walking across Malé takes only about 45 minutes, but do it in pieces. Take a taxi between the historic core and Artificial Beach rather than walking the whole seafront.
  • Sultan Park and the National Museum are the easiest stops: both are level and close together, and the museum gives you a break from the heat.
  • Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (the largest public hospital) and the private ADK Hospital are both on Malé Island. Ambulance is 102. Do not travel without insurance that covers treatment and medical evacuation.
  • Prefer Hulhumalé if a parent has trouble with crowded streets or a long airport run; it is close to the airport by road and calmer than Malé Island.
  • Heat and rain: It is warm all year, with daily highs near 31°C. Rainfall rises from April, so carry a light umbrella that also gives shade, and drink more than you think you need.
