The short answer

Bijolia Temple Group: what visitors should know first

Yes, if you enjoy carved stone temples. The group is compact and mostly level, and gives a calmer, more rewarding visit than the fort. It lies about an hour from Mandalgarh by road and is an easy stop on the way to Bundi.

History and context

The story behind Bijolia Temple Group

Early accounts credit the Huna princes as founders of Bijolia, and the region later passed to the Chauhans and then the Gehlots and Mewar vassals. The temple group is dated by catalogues to the 11th to 13th centuries.

A rock inscription dated V.S. 1226 (1170 CE) from the reign of the Chahamana king Someshvara survives at the nearby Jain temple, and is important for the early history of the Chahamana dynasty.

Why it matters

Why Bijolia Temple Group is worth your time

Bijolia sits on the Uparmal plateau and holds one of the more important early medieval temple groups of eastern Rajasthan. Catalogues date the group to roughly the 11th to 13th centuries, and it is protected by the Jaipur Circle of the ASI.

The carvings and plans reward anyone interested in how Shaiva temples were built in the region, and the site shows how Jain and Shaiva traditions overlapped; scholarship suggests the Undeshwar temple may originally have been Jain. For a traveller from Mandalgarh, it adds a gentler, better-preserved counterpart to the fort.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    Mandakini Kund

The sacred tank forms the centre of the compound.

  2. 02

    Hajareshwar linga

A tall linga is surrounded by hundreds of small lingas.

  3. 03

    Undeshwar sanctum

The sanctum sits below the hall floor, giving the temple its name.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Park near the tank and walk the compound slowly. The Mandakini Kund is a sacred reservoir, and the temples stand around it. The Mahakal temple is usually described as the oldest and most celebrated, and it faces west towards the entrance.

The Hajareshwar temple takes its name from its tall central linga ringed by hundreds of tiny lingas, and the Undeshwar temple is known for a sanctum that sits below the level of its assembly hall. Spend time on the exterior, where friezes, pillars and ceilings show the Bhumija style of temple building.

Combine this with the nearby Parshvanath Jain complex. Early morning gives soft light on the stone, fewer visitors and cooler walking. Carry water and keep valuables secure, as the compound has few facilities.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Go in the morning for softer light
  • Dress modestly and remove footwear where asked
  • Carry water; shade is limited
  • Ask before photographing active shrines
  • Combine with the Parshvanath complex
