Mandalgarh is a small town in Bhilwara district, in the Mewar region of eastern Rajasthan. Its fort stands on a rugged hill at the meeting of the Banas, Berach and Menali rivers and is sometimes counted, after Chittorgarh and Kumbhalgarh, among the great forts of Mewar. It has changed hands repeatedly: Mahmud Khalji of Malwa took it in 1457, the Mewar Ranas recovered it, and Mughal and Mewar rulers held it in turn until the early 18th century.
This is a destination for travellers who like open, lightly visited ruins. The fort is large, its ramparts are broken in places and facilities are minimal, so it suits a slow morning rather than a full day. Inside you find old temples, Jain shrines, ponds and the traces of lost gates; the lanes below belong to an ordinary working town.
The richer cultural stop is in the next valley. Bijolia, in the same district near the Bundi border, has a group of Shiva temples around a sacred tank, protected by the Archaeological Survey of India, and a Digambar Jain temple complex with a 12th-century inscription. Together with Mandalgarh they make a coherent short loop for visitors comfortable on rural roads, best done by car from Bhilwara, Chittorgarh or Bundi, which have more hotels and better connections.
