Mandarmani is a seaside resort village in the Contai subdivision of Purba Medinipur district, on the northern shore of the Bay of Bengal. Wikipedia describes it as one of West Bengal's larger and fast-growing seaside resorts, with a beach of about 13 km. The sand is firm and flat, resorts sit back from the shore, and the mood is quieter than at neighbouring Digha.
The pleasure here is simple. Walk the sand at sunrise, rest through the heat, and return in the late afternoon. Small red crabs crawl across parts of the beach, and a handful of stalls sell shells and handmade jewellery. The place suits short family breaks, couples and older travellers who want a slow weekend and not a packed itinerary.
Beyond the beach there is a modest but real set of outings. Dariapur has a 30 m lighthouse and a small temple linked locally to Bankim Chandra Chatterjee's novel Kapalkundala. Contai has the former salt agency building known as Nimak Mahal. Shankarpur, Tajpur and Junput offer quieter beaches and working fishing harbours. None of these is a major monument, so plan on two nights and one or two half-day trips.
Be realistic about the basics. Private cars are restricted on the sand, the sea is rough in the monsoon months, mobile signal and power can be patchy, and facilities vary from resort to resort. Go between November and February, book a hotel with road access, and keep your plans light.
