The short answer

Goenka Double Haveli: what visitors should know first

Yes, this is one of the best first stops in Mandawa. Go in the morning, expect restoration touch-ups in bright colour, and consider taking a local guide who can read the scenes for you.

History and context

The story behind Goenka Double Haveli

The haveli was built by the Goenka family in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when Mandawa was a prosperous trading town on caravan routes. It is made of two wings, one named for Vishwanath Goenka and one for Tarkeshwar Goenka.

Why it matters

Why Goenka Double Haveli is worth your time

Mandawa is called an open-air gallery because wealthy trading families covered the outside of their homes with paintings. The Goenka Double Haveli shows the scale of that ambition: two houses stitched into one, with enough wall space for a whole library of stories.

It also shows the dilemma of keeping painted havelis alive. Plaster fades, owners move away, and restoration can change the original palette. Seeing both original and retouched surfaces in the same building is a useful lesson in why guides, conservation and ticket income matter in this region.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    Entrance processions

Large elephants and horses greet you at the door, a sign of the family's wealth.

  2. 02

    Two mirrored wings

The southern and northern halves each have their own name and courtyard but read as one house.

  3. 03

    Europe on the walls

Look for English figures and modern objects painted among the older Hindu stories.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Begin with the entrance, where large elephant and horse processions are painted on the walls. The haveli has two wings, the southern Vishwanath Goenka Haveli and the northern Tarkeshwar Goenka Haveli, built so extended family could live together and still have privacy. Notice how the two halves mirror each other.

Inside, the courtyard frescoes carry the usual Shekhawati range: Ramayana and Mahabharata episodes, folk tales, festivals, women and musicians, and some good-humoured portraits of British figures. Look for the way European details sit alongside Rajput style, a result of the merchants' trading contacts.

Be aware that parts of the haveli have been repainted in recent years, and the colours can look artificially bright against the original surfaces. If you want the scenes explained, hire an official guide rather than relying on a caretaker's short tour. Then walk to the Murmuria Haveli nearby, which carries a very different set of subjects.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Go early before tour groups arrive
  • Confirm what the ticket includes
  • Hire an official guide if you want the stories explained
  • Wear shoes that handle thresholds and uneven courtyards
