Why it matters

Why Murmuria Haveli is worth your time

Painted havelis are often presented as relics of a distant past, but Murmuria shows the same tradition still running into the independence era. The merchants who paid for these walls were travelling and trading across India, and the new subjects reflect what they saw: trains, politics, foreign cities.

That is useful context for the rest of the town. Older havelis show religious and royal themes, while later ones record the arrival of rail, photographs and nationalism. Seeing one of the later ones helps explain why the tradition faded when trade routes and tastes shifted.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    Leaders on the wall

Portraits of independence-era figures, including Nehru on horseback, are painted among older subjects.

  2. 02

    A softer palette

Pale, pistachio-like tones give the frontage a different feel from the red and ochre havelis.

  3. 03

    Trains and travel

Look for rail and foreign-city scenes on neighbouring walls.

How to experience it

This haveli is memorable for its choice of subjects. Where older mansions paint gods and kings, the Murmuria paints the 20th century: Nehru on horseback, a portrait of King George V, Bharat Mata and leaders of the freedom struggle such as Gandhi and Tilak. Epic scenes are also present, so the walls span old and new.

Take a moment in the courtyard outside. Outer walls of the neighbouring double haveli carry a long train frieze, and reports describe gondolas on Venetian canals painted above the arches. The colour palette is softer than at older havelis, with pale shades that one writer compared to an Italian mansion.

Spend time on the details rather than rushing to the interior. Pair it with the Goenka Double Haveli opposite and a stop at the Thakurji temple if the doors are open.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Visit with the Goenka Double Haveli in one go
  • Ask about a combined ticket
  • Look at the outer walls as well as the interior
  • Go in the morning for softer light
