Area by area

Manila neighbourhoods compared

  1. 01

    Ermita and Malate

Best for: First-time visitors who want Intramuros, Rizal Park and the bay within a short ride

Good to know: The tourist belt facing Manila Bay, with hotels, malls and restaurants close to the main sights. Streets can be noisy and crowded, so choose a hotel with lifts and ask about taxi access. Check recent reviews for the specific property.

  2. 02

    Intramuros edge

Best for: Travellers who want to be inside the historic core for early starts

Good to know: Walking distance to Fort Santiago, San Agustin Church and the cathedral, with far fewer hotels and dining choices than other districts. Paving is uneven; confirm lifts and vehicle drop-off.

  3. 03

    Makati (Bel-Air, Legazpi Village)

Best for: Families and seniors who want a calmer base with more restaurants, including Indian options

Good to know: A business district south of the old city with malls, restaurants and hospitals nearby. Getting to the old city takes a car ride, which can be slow at peak hours; allow generous time.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
