The short answer
Adoni Fort: what visitors should know first
Only if you like ruins and have spare time. Adoni is a working town about 50 km away; the fort is a climb with uneven ground, so it suits fit visitors, not most seniors.
History and context
The story behind Adoni Fort
Adoni's fort was held by the Vijayanagara Empire, the Adil Shahi sultans of Bijapur and the Mughals, who took it in 1690. Tipu Sultan captured it in 1786 and it passed to the British in 1799, according to Wikipedia.
Siddi Masud, an Abyssinian-born general, ruled Adoni from 1678 to 1688, improved the fort and built the Shahi Jamia Masjid before surrendering to the Mughals.

Why it matters
Why Adoni Fort is worth your time
Adoni was a contested strongpoint on the Deccan plateau, passing between several powers over centuries. Wikipedia credits Siddi Masud Khan, an African-born general, with improving the fort and ruling from 1678 to 1688, a reminder of how varied the region's history was.
That history also helps explain Mantralayam. Rayaru's lifetime coincided with this period of Deccan politics, and the Mutt's own accounts of his life involve the Nawab of Adoni. Seeing the fort gives context to those stories.

How to experience it
Treat Adoni as an optional day trip from Mantralayam. The Mutt lists Adoni about 50 km south, and the road passes through farming country. Go early, hire a car and driver, and ask locally about the best approach to the fort.
Wikipedia notes the fort has had many masters: the Vijayanagara empire, the Adil Shahi sultans of Bijapur and the Mughals, who took it in 1690, followed by Tipu Sultan and the British. The ruins and hill form the visible record of that churn.
Expect a climb, rocky ground and little shade. Take water, sun protection and sturdy shoes. If the climb looks too much, the town itself, a large cotton market, is a quick look at everyday Rayalaseema life.
