Tungabhadra River Ghat, Mantralayam: History, highlights and visitor guide

The Tungabhadra runs behind the Mutt and is where most pilgrims bathe or wash their feet before darshan. It is also the best place in town to sit quietly.

The short answer

Tungabhadra River Ghat: what visitors should know first

Go in the morning before darshan or at dusk. Bathing depends on water level and season, so check locally before you step in, and treat the river as a good place to sit even if you do not get wet.

Why it matters

Why Tungabhadra River Ghat is worth your time

The Mutt's own description places the brindavana on the bank of the Tungabhadra, and Wikipedia describes Mantralayam as lying on the river. The river is why this site was chosen for a matha in the first place, and why a ritual wash is part of the visit.

The Tungabhadra also connects this town to other places in Rayaru's life. His years at Bichali, upstream in Karnataka, were spent on the same river, and the Panchamukhi shrine at Ganadhal lies across it. Seeing the water gives the geography of the whole circuit a shape.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Walk down behind the Mutt before darshan. Most devotees wash their feet, some bathe, and many carry back a small amount of water. Wikivoyage recommends bathing or washing feet before darshan, and that matches what you will see.

The river changes with the season. After the monsoon it can be broad and fast; in the dry months it shrinks to shallow channels with sandbanks. Always check with locals and watch for any warnings before entering the water, especially with children or elders.

If you do not bathe, come at dusk to sit on the steps, watch the light on the water and the pilgrims moving between the Mutt and the bank. It is a calmer view of the town than the queue.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Ask locals about water level before entering
  • Wear non-slip footwear and carry a dry cloth
  • Keep valuables with a family member
  • Avoid the river after heavy rain
  • Do not litter; carry bags out
