Plan 01

1 day in Mawlynnong

  1. 01

Day 1: Village, bridge and river

Leave Shillong early so you reach Mawlynnong by about 9 am, before weekend crowds. Walk the lanes first, then see the Church of the Epiphany and, if the sky is clear and you are comfortable with the climb, the Sky View tower. Drive to Riwai for the living root bridge, and stop at the Balancing Rock on the way. Have lunch locally, then continue to Dawki, about 15 km away, for the Umngot river boat ride. Start back to Shillong by mid-afternoon, because the hill road is slow after dark.

Balancing Rock10 to 20 minutesEasyDaylight in dry weather; combine with the village walk

Balancing Rock10 to 20 minutesEasyDaylight in dry weather; combine with the village walk

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Riwai living root bridge: Outlook describes a paved approach to the ticket counter, followed by steps and forest path down to the stream. There is no lift, steps can be slippery, and seating is limited. Reaching the bridge itself is manageable for many seniors with a stick and patience; the lower bank is harder.

Pacing

Pacing a Mawlynnong trip for parents and children

  • Plan the visit around the long drive. Shillong to Mawlynnong takes about three hours each way, so break the journey or stay a night.
  • Skip the Sky View climb if you have knee or balance problems; the bamboo stair is narrow and slippery when wet.
  • The Riwai bridge involves a paved approach, then steps and a forest path. Take a stick and go slowly, and avoid it in or just after rain.
  • Carry cash from Shillong or Dawki, since the village has no ATM, and bring your own water and snacks.
  • Choose a ground-level room with an attached bathroom in a homestay, and ask about power backup.
  • Visit on a weekday and arrive before 9 am to avoid the crowds.
