Before you go
Mawlynnong with elderly parents: what to know
- Plan the visit around the long drive. Shillong to Mawlynnong takes about three hours each way, so break the journey or stay a night.
- Skip the Sky View climb if you have knee or balance problems; the bamboo stair is narrow and slippery when wet.
- The Riwai bridge involves a paved approach, then steps and a forest path. Take a stick and go slowly, and avoid it in or just after rain.
- Carry cash from Shillong or Dawki, since the village has no ATM, and bring your own water and snacks.
- Choose a ground-level room with an attached bathroom in a homestay, and ask about power backup.
- Visit on a weekday and arrive before 9 am to avoid the crowds.
Easiest first
Places in Mawlynnong sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (3)
- Balancing Rock (Places to visit · 10 to 20 minutes) — Reports describe it as close to the road, with at most a short walk from where you stop. Ground can be uneven and muddy after rain, and there is little seating, but most visitors can see it with minimal effort.
- Church of the Epiphany (Places of worship · 15 to 30 minutes) — The church sits in the village, and visitors often park in the adjacent field and walk a short distance. Paths are mostly level, though they can be slippery when wet. Seating may be available inside, subject to services.
- Mawlynnong village walk (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours for the lanes; add time for Sky View and Riwai) — Lanes are mostly level and paved or well swept, with short slopes between houses. Seating is limited, so carry a folding stool or plan stops at a tea stall. Wet paths are slippery, and the drive in is long, which is the harder part for older travellers.
Some walking — plan a break (2)
- Riwai living root bridge (Places to visit · 45 to 90 minutes) — Outlook describes a paved approach to the ticket counter, followed by steps and forest path down to the stream. There is no lift, steps can be slippery, and seating is limited. Reaching the bridge itself is manageable for many seniors with a stick and patience; the lower bank is harder.
- Sky View bamboo watchtower (Places to visit · 20 to 40 minutes including the queue) — The climb is by narrow bamboo steps with a rope handrail, and the platform is small. It is not suitable for anyone with balance or knee problems, or for those nervous of heights. Older travellers can enjoy the view at ground level and the village lanes instead.

Practical tips for Mawlynnong
- Cash. There is no ATM in the village according to guides. Withdraw cash in Shillong or Dawki, and carry small notes for fees at Sky View, the Riwai bridge and parking.
- Getting there. The usual route is from Shillong by road, about 90 km and 2.5 to 3 hours. Signage is limited, so use a driver who knows the route or ask a local guide. Check road conditions in the monsoon.
- Rain and leeches. June to September brings heavy rain, slippery trails and leeches. If you visit then, wear socks and shoes with grip, and keep time free for delays.
- Respect the village. This is a working village. Ask before photographing people or their homes, do not pluck flowers, and use the bamboo bins or take rubbish out. Plastic is discouraged.
- Crowds. Weekends and holidays are crowded. Arrive before 9 am on a weekday for calmer lanes and better light.
- Stairs and footing. Sky View and the Riwai bridge involve stairs and slippery steps. Older travellers should take a stick and go slowly, or skip the climb.
- Weather and clothing. Mornings are cool in winter and warm and humid in summer. Carry a light rain jacket year round, since showers can come at any time of year in these hills.
- Food and water. Eating options are limited and simple. Carry water and snacks, and ask your homestay host about meals in advance, especially if you need vegetarian food.
