Why it matters
Why Bethuadahari Wildlife Sanctuary is worth your time
Bethuadahari was established in 1980 to preserve a small piece of the central Gangetic alluvial zone, a landscape that has largely been converted to farmland and towns. At only 67 hectares it is a modest refuge, but it is one of the few places in Nadia where you can walk among sal and teak and see wild deer.
For a Mayapur stay, it offers a different rhythm from the devotional programme: shade, birdsong and an easy walk. Treat it as a gentle family outing rather than a wildlife expedition.

How to experience it
The sanctuary lies beside the highway at Bethuadahari, in Nakashipara block, about 22 km north of Krishnanagar. From Mayapur, the simplest way is to hire a car for the half day and ask the driver to confirm the route; buses on the highway also serve the area. The journey takes well over an hour each way.
Once inside, follow the marked trail. The vegetation is sal, teak, arjuna, sissoo and bamboo, and the best-known residents are chital or spotted deer, along with jackals, foxes, porcupines, langurs and many parakeets. Deer are most likely to be seen early in the day or later in the afternoon, and middays are quiet.
Stay on the path, do not feed the animals, and keep an eye on monkeys and your food. Food options are limited, so bring snacks, and combine this with a lunch stop in Krishnanagar on the way back.
