Mayapur sits in Nadia district, on the bank of the Bhagirathi-Ganga close to where the Jalangi river joins it, roughly 130 km north of Kolkata by the district's own reckoning. For Gaudiya Vaishnavas it is the birthplace of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, the 15th-century saint who is said to have been born here in 1486. It is also the headquarters of ISKCON, the Hare Krishna movement founded in New York in 1966, which established its Mayapur campus in the early 1970s.
The town has two layers. Inside the ISKCON campus you find a large, orderly complex with a main temple, the Prabhupada samadhi and museum, a goshala, prasadam halls and, rising above everything, the Temple of the Vedic Planetarium, which has been under construction since 2009. Outside the campus gate, older sites such as Yogapith, Srivas Angan and Sri Chaitanya Math are linked by lanes of electric toto rickshaws and small shops, and across the Ganga lies Nabadwip, a historic town of Sanskrit learning and more Chaitanya sites.
Mayapur works best as a one- or two-night stay built around the morning and evening aratis. It is vegetarian, alcohol-free and early-rising, with long queues at festival times and very little else to do after dark. Travel here involves a train or taxi from Kolkata, then often a ferry or a rickshaw hop, so give yourself unhurried time on the way in and out.
For older travellers it is gentler than most pilgrim towns. The campus is largely level, there are places to sit, and totos reach the sites outside. The real demands are heat, queues at festival times and the early start that makes the day feel most rewarding.
