The short answer

Manjira Wildlife Sanctuary: what visitors should know first

Go for birdwatching in winter, especially if you enjoy water and crocodiles. It is a short stop between Medak and Hyderabad, not a major sight. Confirm boat services and visiting arrangements before going.

History and context

The story behind Manjira Wildlife Sanctuary

The sanctuary was declared in June 1978. In 1974 only four breeding pairs of mugger crocodile remained in the area, and a breeding programme followed. It covers about 20 sq km of a man-made reservoir that supplies drinking water to Hyderabad and Secunderabad.

Why it matters

Why Manjira Wildlife Sanctuary is worth your time

Manjira shows how a drinking-water reservoir for Hyderabad can also be a wildlife refuge. Founded to save a small remnant of mugger crocodiles, it now protects a population estimated at several hundred and a varied birdlife that includes vulnerable species such as the lesser adjutant.

For travellers, it adds a wetland to a trip dominated by forts and temples, and it is an easy way to end a Medak day with a different landscape.

How to experience it

The sanctuary follows the Manjira reservoir for about 36 km, and the best way to see it is by boat, where available. Birdwatchers go in winter, when migratory ducks and waterbirds arrive; common teal, cotton pygmy goose and ruddy shelduck are among the species listed. Binoculars and identification books are reported to be provided on boat trips.

Crocodiles are the other draw. The sanctuary was founded to protect the mugger crocodile, with an estimated few hundred animals now, though you cannot count on seeing them on a short visit. Keep a safe distance, and listen to the guide.

An environmental education centre with a small museum, library and auditorium is part of the site. Pack water, a hat and sun protection, and leave early in the morning for the best light and the most birds.
