History and context

The story behind Pocharam Wildlife Sanctuary

Wikipedia gives the sanctuary's area as 130 sq km and an establishment date of 1952, although the text refers to an earlier period. The lake that gives it its name was formed between 1916 and 1922 by bunding the Allair stream. The sanctuary lies partly in Medak and Nizamabad districts and was once a hunting ground of the Nizams.

Why it matters

Why Pocharam Wildlife Sanctuary is worth your time

Pocharam is one of the quieter protected forests in Telangana and a former hunting ground of the Nizam. Its value for visitors is simple: an easy chance to walk in dry deciduous forest without travelling far from Hyderabad, and to see how a reservoir and woodland can support wildlife together.

It is not a place for guaranteed sightings. The experience is slower, closer to a nature walk, and works well for families who enjoy being outdoors and for anyone who wants a break from temples and forts.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Plan to reach Pocharam early, because permission and the assignment of a guide at the office opposite the entrance can take time. Cars are allowed but two-wheelers are not. Once cleared, you are taken on a trail of about 4 km that runs through dry forest, with a watchtower roughly halfway where you can scan the surroundings.

Published guides list sambar, nilgai, chinkara, chital and four-horned antelope among the animals, along with wild boar, jackals and hare. You will not see all of them on a single visit, and midday is usually quiet. The best chance comes in the cooler morning hours, and in winter when the forest is dry and more open.

Pocharam Lake itself, formed by bunding the Allair stream between 1916 and 1922, is a pleasant place for birdwatching and a rest. Carry water, wear closed shoes and bring binoculars if you have them. There is an ecotourism centre, but food options are limited.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Arrive early to arrange permission
  • Carry water, snacks and binoculars
  • Leave two-wheelers behind; use a car
  • Confirm fees with the forest office
