Why it matters
Why Melkote Temple Wildlife Sanctuary is worth your time
The sanctuary protects dry-forest habitat that is increasingly rare around southern Karnataka. It was set up on 17 June 1974, mainly to protect the Indian wolf, and it also supports leopards, sloth bears, striped hyenas and nearly 200 bird species, including the vulnerable yellow-throated bulbul.
It also gives Melukote a natural setting beyond the temples, and it is a reminder that the hill town is surrounded by wild, rocky country.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Do not turn up unannounced. Contact the Karnataka Forest Department to ask whether visitor entry is allowed, which block you can see and whether a guide is required. Such rules change, and I found no verified information on facilities.
If you do get permission, plan an early start. The terrain is rocky and the habitat is dry deciduous forest and scrub, so carry water, wear sturdy shoes and cover up against sun. Wildlife is hard to see: expect birds, monkeys and perhaps signs of other animals rather than guaranteed sightings.
For most Melukote visitors, the sanctuary is better treated as background, explaining the rocky ridges you see from the hill temples. Keep any visit short and respectful.
