How to reach Mirik by air

Bagdogra Airport (IXB), near Siliguri, is the nearest airport, about 50 km from Mirik. Allow roughly 1.5 to 2 hours by road, longer in rain or traffic. Prepaid taxis operate from the terminal, or ask your hotel for a transfer.

How to reach Mirik by train

New Jalpaiguri (NJP), next to Siliguri, is the nearest major railhead, about 50 km from Mirik by road. Taxis and shared jeeps run from Siliguri; confirm current pick-up points before you travel.

How to reach Mirik by road

Mirik is about 52 km from Siliguri and about 49 km from Darjeeling on winding hill roads. A few buses and shared taxis serve both towns, and a private taxi is the most comfortable choice. Allow extra time during the monsoon.

Getting around Mirik

Shared taxis link the lake and Mirik Bazar for a few rupees, and local taxis serve Bokar, tea estates and viewpoints at negotiable rates. The lake, Bokar and Debisthan can be reached on foot, but the climbs are steep.

For parents and senior travellers

Easy transfers to and in Mirik

  • Take a taxi to Bokar Monastery and Debisthan's base instead of walking the climbs; the stairs at Debisthan are long and steep.
  • Walk only the stretch of the lake path you enjoy; it is easy to stop and take a shared taxi back to Krishnanagar.
  • The road from Siliguri is winding; sit in front or take motion-sickness medication if you are prone, and plan to arrive before dark.
  • Keep a rain plan from June to September; landslides can slow or block roads and are hard to predict.
  • Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
  • Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
  • Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
