Plan 01
1 day in Mirik
- 01
Day 1: Lake, monastery and a tea slope
Start at Sumendu Lake in the morning, when the air is clearest and the lakeside is quiet, and walk over the footbridge. Take a taxi up to Bokar Monastery rather than walking the climb, then continue to Rameetay Dara or a nearby viewpoint if the weather is clear. After lunch in Krishnanagar or Mirik Bazar, drive to the Thurbo or Soureni tea slopes for an hour. Return to the lake for chatpati or momos as the light fades.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Sumendu Lake (Mirik Lake) 2 to 3 hours Easy Early morning or late afternoon; October to November and March to May for clearer views Bokar Monastery About 1 hour Moderate Morning; clear days for views Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Bokar Monastery: Cars reach the gate and the final stretch is a short walk with a few steps. The approach road is steep and winding, so a taxi is the sensible choice for anyone with limited stamina. Seating inside is minimal, so allow for standing.

Day 1: The lake and the town
Walk part or all of the 3.5 km lakeside path at an easy pace, crossing the footbridge and taking a boat ride if you wish. Have lunch near Krishnanagar, then visit Debisthan temple if the stairs suit you. Spend the late afternoon in Mirik Bazar and the lakeside craft stalls.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Debisthan Temple About 1 hour Demanding Morning or late afternoon; March for the Basanta Utsav festival Pace: Debisthan Temple involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.
With parents at Debisthan Temple: The stairway has several flights and no lift, so it is demanding for older visitors or anyone with knee trouble. There is a tea stall halfway for a rest. Consider enjoying the lake instead if you tire easily.

Day 3: Pashupatinagar or Darjeeling, then onward
Indian visitors with photo ID can drive to Pashupatinagar, the Nepal border market, a short drive away, stopping at Simana for views on the way. Alternatively continue towards Darjeeling, about 49 km away, as your onward leg rather than a round trip.

Guides for the stops on these routes
Pacing
Pacing a Mirik trip for parents and children
- Take a taxi to Bokar Monastery and Debisthan's base instead of walking the climbs; the stairs at Debisthan are long and steep.
- Walk only the stretch of the lake path you enjoy; it is easy to stop and take a shared taxi back to Krishnanagar.
- Pack warm layers even in spring: mornings and evenings at this altitude are cool, and the Himalayan weather changes quickly.
- The road from Siliguri is winding; sit in front or take motion-sickness medication if you are prone, and plan to arrive before dark.
- Choose a hotel with lift access or ground-floor rooms, and check hot-water supply in winter.
- Keep a rain plan from June to September; landslides can slow or block roads and are hard to predict.
