The short answer

Moatsu Festival: what visitors should know first

Plan around it if you can. Moatsu is the best single time to see Ao culture in Mokokchung, but book rooms early, check dates with local announcements, and expect crowds and open-air heat or rain in the programmes.

History and context

The story behind Moatsu Festival

Moatsü is held in the first week of May, after the sowing, as a break from fieldwork and a prayer for a good harvest. In recent years the town programme has been organised by the Ao Senden, the Ao apex body, over three days from 1 May, while villages such as Chuchuyimlang hold their own events.

Why it matters

Why Moatsu Festival is worth your time

Moatsu is a prayer for blessings on the sowing season, honouring Lijaba, the creator of the earth, and marks a break between sowing and the long weeks of field work. Holding it in the first week of May ties it to the agricultural year.

For visitors it is the clearest window into Ao culture. Villages invite one another, other Naga tribes are often invited, and songs and dances pass between generations. Under the Ao Senden, the town celebration has become a shared public event, while village programmes such as Chuchuyimlang's keep the older village form.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Book accommodation early and confirm dates locally. In recent years the Ao Senden has organised a three-day programme starting on 1 May at the Imkongmeren Sports Complex in Mokokchung town, and villages hold their own celebrations as well. Ungma, Mokokchung Village and Chuchuyimlang are the usual choices.

Go to a town programme first for the variety: troupes from different villages, songs, dances and a communal feast. Then, if you have a second day, choose one village for a more local feel; Chuchuyimlang is the state's designated Moatsu destination.

Be prepared for variable weather and standing in crowds. Sit near the front early if you want a view, carry water, and ask permission before taking close photographs. Dress modestly, and treat the feast as an invitation, not a free-for-all.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Book accommodation well ahead
  • Confirm dates with the Ao Senden or local news
  • Carry rain gear and water
  • Ask before photographing people
