History and context
The story behind Mokokchung Village
Ao folklore says the Aos emerged from six stones at Longterok, moved north and settled at Soyim, now Ungma. A group later moved northeast to found Mokokchung. The British made Mokokchung town an administrative unit in 1890. American Baptist missionaries began influencing the village from 1872, and the first convert from the village came in 1910.

Why it matters
Why Mokokchung Village is worth your time
Mokokchung Village is where the town's name comes from. According to Wikipedia, tradition says a group left Soyim, now Ungma, unwillingly and settled here; the name combines Mokok, meaning unwillingly, and chung, meaning a group of people.
It also shows an unusual way of running a community. Under the Putu Menden, members are nominated from each of the five clans for long terms, and the chief is chosen by the members. The British made Mokokchung an administrative unit in 1890, and the village has been central to the district ever since.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Treat this as a village visit, not a sightseeing stop. Ask your hotel or a local contact to take you round or to introduce you at the village council. The village is split into two sectors, upper and lower, and both speak the Mongsen dialect.
The village skyline is its best view: houses stacked along the ridge, with the town beyond. Take a short walk if you are able and ask about village customs. It is governed under customary law approved under the Nagaland Village and Area Councils Act of 1978, and its council, the Putu Menden, is nominated from each of the five clans.
Treat it as a companion stop to Ungma, which is just up the road, and use the two visits together to see how Ao village life is organised.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
