Why it matters
Why Cemoro Lawang is worth your time
Cemoro Lawang has become the usual base for Bromo because the caldera's rim road ends here, which cuts the morning journey. It is a tiny hamlet, so facilities are limited, and the village exists partly because of the volcano.
Staying here also puts you among Tenggerese communities who farm the surrounding slopes and keep the ceremonies alive. That is worth noticing: the village is both a base and a living place.

How to experience it
Cemoro Lawang is a small hamlet at about 2,217 m, within Ngadisari village in Sukapura subdistrict, Probolinggo Regency. It has a gate to the national park, a viewpoint over Batok and Bromo, and a cluster of homestays, hotels, small cafés and warungs along the rim road.
Use your first evening to see the caldera in dusk light, then go to bed early. Start the next day around 3.00 am for the jeep to Penanjakan or for a shorter run to Seruni Point. If you prefer to avoid the dark, ask your lodge about a late-morning visit when the sand is calmer.
Tenggerese houses in Cemoro Lawang and neighbouring Ngadisari are colourful and well kept. Walk quietly, respect temples and do not photograph residents without asking.
