Mount Bromo is a small active volcano, about 2,329 m high, standing inside the much older Tengger Caldera in East Java. Around it lies the Sea of Sand, a flat grey plain protected since 1919, with Mount Batok's ridged cone beside it and Mount Semeru, Java's highest peak, on the southern horizon. The whole area belongs to Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, which covers roughly 50,000 hectares.
The usual visit is short and early. You sleep on the caldera rim or in Sukapura, climb into a jeep around 3.00 am, watch the sunrise from Penanjakan or a quieter viewpoint, then cross the sand to the foot of Bromo. Anyone with the stamina can climb a steep staircase of about 250 steps to the crater rim; many visitors, including older travellers, choose to view the crater from below and the day is still full.
This is also a living landscape. The Tenggerese people, who follow a form of Javanese Hinduism, farm the slopes and hold their most important ceremony, Yadnya Kasada, at the crater. Pura Luhur Poten, a black-stone temple, stands on the sand sea. Treat the area as a place of worship and a working park, not only a viewpoint.
For Indian families, the main questions are cold, altitude and food. Nights can be close to freezing in the dry season, most meals are Indonesian, and the nearest comfortable towns are some hours away. With a warm lodge, a flexible morning and realistic expectations, two nights is enough for most people.
