Before you go
Mount Bromo with elderly parents: what to know
- Sleep near the caldera the night before; a 3 am start from Surabaya or Malang is exhausting.
- Choose a lodge with heating and hot water, and carry a warm layer even in the dry season.
- Treat the crater staircase as optional; the Sea of Sand and viewpoints are rewarding from below.
- Carry medicines, a torch and warm gloves for the dark morning, and consider a walking stick.
- Take travel insurance with medical cover; serious care is in larger cities, hours away.
- Keep one rest block after the sunrise run, since altitude and the early start tire most people.
Easiest first
Places in Mount Bromo sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (5)
- Bromo Jeep Tour (Places to visit · 3 to 5 hours depending on stops) — Seated in the jeep it is easy, but the ride is bumpy, cold and dusty. Seats can be cramped. Older travellers should ask for a vehicle with a good seat and agree stops.
- Mount Batok (Places to visit · 10 to 20 minutes as a photo stop) — Viewing is easy from jeep stops and the car park. There is no formal path up the cone for casual visitors, and the slopes are steep and loose, so do not plan to climb it.
- Pura Luhur Poten (Places of worship · 20 to 30 minutes) — The temple sits on level sand beside the Bromo car park, so reaching it is easy. There is little shade and no seating to speak of, and the sand underfoot is loose. Cold and dust are the main discomforts.
- Ranu Pani (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours) — The village sits at over 2,000 m, so cold and thin air tire some visitors. The road from Tumpang is rough. Seating is basic.
- Sea of Sand (Places to visit · About 1 to 2 hours as part of a jeep loop) — If you stay in the jeep, it is easy: the ride is bumpy and dusty but not strenuous. Walking on the soft sand is tiring for anyone with weak knees or breathing problems, and wind-blown dust can irritate. Horses are available for the flat section, though riders should check the animal's condition and fit.
Some walking — plan a break (4)
- Cemoro Lawang (Places to visit · Overnight base; an hour or two to walk around) — The village is on a steep rim at around 2,200 m, with cold nights and uneven paths. Lodges vary in heating and hot water. Some travellers will prefer Sukapura, lower down, where Wikivoyage lists more mid-range options.
- Madakaripura Waterfall (Places to visit · 2 to 3 hours including the drive from Sukapura) — The approach involves a path and wet, slippery rock near the falls. Wikivoyage advises umbrellas for the spray. Older travellers should wear shoes with grip and stay on the main path.
- Penanjakan Viewpoint (Places to visit · About 1.5 to 2 hours including the wait before sunrise) — Jeeps drop you near the top, but a final stretch of steps and slopes leads to the viewing platforms in the dark. The air is cold, the platforms are crowded and there is little seating. Dress in layers, bring a torch and a walking stick if you use one, and consider a quieter point if the dark climb worries you.
- Seruni Point (Places to visit · About 1 to 1.5 hours) — Seruni is about 6 km from Cemoro Lawang per Wikivoyage, and can be reached by vehicle or a walk of roughly an hour or more. The paved road is easier than the dark track to Penanjakan, but the climb and cold still tire older visitors. A short ride is more comfortable than walking in the dark.
Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (2)
- Mount Bromo Crater (Places to visit · About 1 to 1.5 hours including the walk from the jeep parking, longer in crowds) — The route is the hardest part of a Bromo trip: a stretch of sand or mud from the temple car park, then a steep staircase of roughly 250 steps with a narrow rim path at the top. Horses can carry you across the flat sand but not up the stairs. Older travellers with knee, heart or breathing issues should treat the crater as optional and enjoy Bromo from below.
- Yadnya Kasada Festival (Culture and craft · A full night and morning) — Crowds, cold and long waits make Kasada hard for older visitors. Access to the crater and temple may be limited. Many people watch from below or from the sand.

Practical tips for Mount Bromo
- Cold. Nights are cold all year and can approach freezing in the dry season. Pack layers, gloves, a hat and a windproof jacket, and check that your room is heated.
- Early starts. Sunrise trips begin around 3.00 to 3.30 am. Book the jeep the day before, sleep early and keep the next morning free.
- Volcanic activity. Bromo is active and access to the rim or caldera floor can be restricted at short notice. Check with your lodge and follow park instructions.
- Dust and fumes. Fine sand and sulphurous fumes affect the eyes and lungs. Carry a scarf or mask, and sunglasses.
- Cash and tickets. Park fees, checkpoint charges and jeeps are often paid in cash. Buy from official counters, since vouchers sold by touts can cost more.
- Dress and respect. Dress modestly near Pura Luhur Poten, stay clear of ceremonies and ask before photographing people.
- Health. Carry regular medicines and travel insurance. Serious medical care is in larger cities such as Malang or Surabaya, hours away.
- Entry rules. Indian passport holders are listed for visa on arrival or e-VOA; check the official immigration site before travel.
