Plan 01

1 day at Mount Bromo

  1. 01

Day 1: Sunrise loop from Cemoro Lawang

Arrive the evening before and sleep early. Leave around 3.00 to 3.30 am in a jeep for Penanjakan, or for Seruni Point if you prefer a quieter and shorter option. After sunrise, drive down onto the Sea of Sand, stop at Pura Luhur Poten and decide whether to climb the crater staircase. Return to your lodge by mid-morning for breakfast and rest, then travel on in the afternoon.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Cemoro LawangOvernight base; an hour or two to walk aroundModerateDry season; mornings and evenings for the view
    Seruni PointAbout 1 to 1.5 hoursModerateDry-season dawn
Sea of SandAbout 1 to 2 hours as part of a jeep loopEasyEarly morning in the dry season; dust and wind rise later in the day
Pura Luhur Poten20 to 30 minutesEasyEarly morning, outside any ceremony; around Yadnya Kasada the area is crowded

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Cemoro Lawang: The village is on a steep rim at around 2,200 m, with cold nights and uneven paths. Lodges vary in heating and hot water. Some travellers will prefer Sukapura, lower down, where Wikivoyage lists more mid-range options.

With parents at Seruni Point: Seruni is about 6 km from Cemoro Lawang per Wikivoyage, and can be reached by vehicle or a walk of roughly an hour or more. The paved road is easier than the dark track to Penanjakan, but the climb and cold still tire older visitors. A short ride is more comfortable than walking in the dark.

Plan 02

2 days at Mount Bromo

  1. 01

Day 1: Arrival and caldera view

Travel from Surabaya or Malang to Cemoro Lawang or Sukapura, check in and rest, as the altitude and cold tire most people. Walk to the rim viewpoint at dusk, eat early and sleep.

  2. 02

Day 2: Sunrise, sand and a slow afternoon

Take the pre-dawn jeep loop with the viewpoint, the Sea of Sand and the crater car park. Return for breakfast, rest, and use the afternoon for a warm drink, village walk or a drive to Madakaripura Waterfall. Leave the next morning.

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Madakaripura Waterfall: The approach involves a path and wet, slippery rock near the falls. Wikivoyage advises umbrellas for the spray. Older travellers should wear shoes with grip and stay on the main path.

    Day 1: Arrive and acclimatise

Reach Sukapura or Cemoro Lawang in the afternoon. Keep the day light: check heating in the room, walk the rim at dusk and eat early.

Pacing

Pacing a Mount Bromo trip for parents and children

  • Sleep near the caldera the night before; a 3 am start from Surabaya or Malang is exhausting.
  • Choose a lodge with heating and hot water, and carry a warm layer even in the dry season.
  • Treat the crater staircase as optional; the Sea of Sand and viewpoints are rewarding from below.
  • Carry medicines, a torch and warm gloves for the dark morning, and consider a walking stick.
  • Take travel insurance with medical cover; serious care is in larger cities, hours away.
  • Keep one rest block after the sunrise run, since altitude and the early start tire most people.
