How to reach Mount Bromo by air

Surabaya Juanda (SUB) is the main gateway, about 3 to 4 hours by road to the caldera. Direct flights from India were not verified; Juanda lists Singapore and Kuala Lumpur services, so most Indian visitors connect via those hubs. Malang's airport (MLG) is closer but lists only Jakarta flights.

How to reach Mount Bromo by train

Probolinggo station (PB) is the usual railhead, with about 1.5 hours by road to Cemoro Lawang; Malang station (ML) serves the southern approach. There is no train service to the caldera itself.

How to reach Mount Bromo by road

The main road route runs from Probolinggo through Sukapura to Cemoro Lawang, about 40 km of climbing. A second route leads from Pasuruan via Tosari and Wonokitri to Penanjakan, and a third from Malang via Tumpang. A private car with driver is the most comfortable choice.

Getting around Mount Bromo

Jeeps carry visitors around the caldera, with up to six people per vehicle. Horses cross the flat sand. Minibuses run from Probolinggo's Bayuangga terminal to Cemoro Lawang but can be slow, so a private driver is easier for families.

For parents and senior travellers

Easy transfers to and in Mount Bromo

  • Choose a lodge with heating and hot water, and carry a warm layer even in the dry season.
  • Carry medicines, a torch and warm gloves for the dark morning, and consider a walking stick.
  • Take travel insurance with medical cover; serious care is in larger cities, hours away.
  • Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
  • Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
  • Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
