Mukteshwar is a small village on a ridge in the Kumaon hills, in Nainital district, at roughly 2,170 metres. It takes its name from Mukteshwar Dham, a Shiva temple said to be about 350 years old, which stands on the highest point of the village. For travellers it works as a quieter alternative to Nainital: fewer shops, less traffic and wider views.
The village has an unexpected history. In 1893 the British moved their Imperial Bacteriological Laboratory here to produce vaccines against cattle plague, and the institution survives as the Mukteswar campus of the Indian Veterinary Research Institute. Its red-brick buildings share the hilltop with the temple, and Jim Corbett's writing refers to the place as Muktesar.
There are not many formal sights, and that is the point. A day here is the temple, the rock outcrop of Chauli Ki Jali, a walk through orchard villages such as Sitla, and a sunset when the sky is clear. Day trips reach Ramgarh and its orchards and literary connections, and Peora for a quieter village day.
Mukteshwar suits families and older travellers who want fresh air and stillness, provided they plan for altitude, cold evenings and winding roads. October to November and March to May bring the clearest weather; the monsoon months from July to September are wet, foggy and best avoided.
